I don’t know when Dirt Nasty (Simon Rex) found his true calling, maybe it was in between failed sitcoms and MTV VJ stints. Regardless of when, all that matters is that he found it. Drugs, drinking, girls and having his pants fall down are pretty much what hes good at. But hes even better at writing songs about it.
Dirt Nasty only played three songs at the Crimson Lounge this Saturday night but the absurdity of his lyrics and stage presence made the brief spectacle well worth the blistering cold wait outside. Pretending to blow lines off of just about anything he could call a prop, he reminds you of how much fun rap can be.
He may roll with Andre Legacy and Mickey Avalon, but Dirt Nasty is in a league of his own. Does he have true rap skills? Depends on the definition. His rhymes may be monosyllabic but his purity is never in question. Like the great rappers of old, Biggie, De La Soul, Pharcyde, etc. he know a good laugh is as important as complex wordplay.
